Every second Saturday in May, a familiar routine takes on a deeper purpose. Alongside delivering mail and packages, letter carriers across the country collect bags of non-perishable food left by mailboxes, helping restock local food pantries. Known as the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the effort has been going strong for more than 30 years.
Organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers, the drive has grown into the largest one-day food collection event in the United States, supporting food banks in communities nationwide.
What makes it stand out is its simplicity. Residents place a bag of shelf-stable food items by their mailbox, and their carrier takes care of the rest. No special trip or sign-up required, just a small act that adds up when millions take part.
The idea dates back to 1991, when NALC President Vincent R. Sombrotto worked with labor and postal leaders to address growing food insecurity. A pilot program in 10 cities later that year showed promise, leading to a nationwide rollout.
Timing turned out to be critical. Food banks noted that donations typically drop off after the holidays, making late spring an ideal window. The first national drive was held in May 1993, collecting more than 11 million pounds of food in a single day.
Since then, participation has expanded steadily. Over the decades, the drive has brought in more than 1.9 billion pounds of food, helping fill gaps for families facing hunger.
Beyond the numbers, the event highlights something more personal. Letter carriers are part of the fabric of their communities, showing up daily and often stepping in during moments of need. Whether through this drive or other outreach efforts, they continue a long tradition of service beyond the job itself.
This year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive takes place on May 9, 2026. Taking part is simple: gather non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, or peanut butter, place them in a bag by your mailbox, and your letter carrier will pick them up.
